Pigeon Mail

Welcome to Pigeon Mail, a blog dedicated to shedding light on the stories that often go untold, the issues that are overlooked, and the voices that need to be heard. Here, we merge investigative journalism with a deep commitment to social justice, focusing on the lived experiences of marginalized communities, mental health advocacy, and the systemic challenges that shape our world.

About the Author

I’m ‘Pigeon’ 🙂 , a British Nigerian, non-binary individual with a passion for truth-telling, advocacy, and creating spaces for dialogue on critical issues. My journey has been anything but conventional—I’ve lived in a psychiatric unit for a year straight, which has profoundly influenced my understanding of mental health, institutionalization, and the importance of compassionate care. Notably, at 14, I was mute for a year, unable to speak, which compelled me to turn to writing as my primary means of expression—an experience that deepened my understanding of the power of words and fuels my commitment to this blog today; As someone who is care experienced and who has faced the complexities of life without traditional support systems, I’m driven by a deep desire to help others through my writing.

Losing my mum at a young age has fueled my dedication to this work. It’s not just about uncovering stories; it’s about creating change, challenging systems, and making sure that every person, especially those from minority backgrounds, has their story heard and respected. I believe in the power of music, love, and helping others as vital parts of our humanity, and I bring these values into every piece I write.

What We Cover

Pigeon Mail tackles the tough topics with honesty and integrity. My pieces delve into the intricacies of mental health care, especially within inpatient settings, and how these systems often fail the very individuals they are meant to protect. I explore the intersections of race, gender, and identity, particularly focusing on the experiences of those who, like me, straddle multiple identities and face unique challenges as a result.

I also take a closer look at the broader societal structures that contribute to issues like substance abuse, systemic racism, and the marginalization of care-experienced individuals. Through investigative journalism, personal narratives, and in-depth research, Pigeon Mail is committed to uncovering the truth and advocating for those whose stories are too often silenced.

Pigeon’s Mission

Pigeon Mail is not just a blog; it’s a platform for change. My mission is to bring attention to the issues that matter most, to challenge the status quo, and to advocate for the reform of systems that perpetuate inequality and injustice. I believe in the power of storytelling to inspire action, foster empathy, and create a more just and compassionate world.
