Who on earth is pigeon, and what is Pigeon Mail!?!?!

Hi flockk

Welcome to the nest, pigeon mail is a blog dedicated to shedding light on the stories that often go untold, the issues that are overlooked, and the voices that need to be heard. Here, I merge my passion for investigative journalism with my commitment to activism social justice, focusing on the lived experiences of marginalized communities, mental health advocacy, and the systemic challenges that shape our world. The world is a better place when these imbalances are talked about and not brushed under the rug.

About the Author

I’m ‘Pigeon’ 🙂 , a British Nigerian, non-binary individual with a passion for truth-telling, advocacy, and creating spaces for dialogue on critical issues. My journey has been anything but conventional – I’ve lived in a psychiatric unit for a year straight, which has profoundly influenced my understanding of mental health, institutionalization, and the importance of compassionate care. Notably, at 14, I was selectively mute for a year due to a traumatic experience, I was unable to speak and writing became my primary means of expression. I’d always loved writing, I’d always wanted to write a book when I was younger, and here I was thrown into a situation where I had no choice but to write every part of the day in order to convey my needs and feelings. This experience deepened my understanding of the power of words and fuels my commitment to this blog today; As someone who is care experienced and who has faced the complexities of life without traditional support systems, I’m driven by a deep desire to help others through my writing.

Losing my mum at a young age has fuelled my dedication to this work. My mum always found a way to make things possible, while working with a limited amount of recourses. There’s always opportunity to try and create despite oppressive regimes and systemic challenges. Pigeon mail is not just about statically uncovering stories; it’s a space to allow a constant flow of dialogue and making sure that every person, especially those from minority backgrounds, has their story heard and respected. I believe in the power of music, love, and helping others as vital parts of our humanity, and I bring these values into every piece I write. When we create anything, we seed a bud of change, when we keep going we create a garden, I hope pigeon mail keeps growing and i’m able to help others where possible :).

What I Cover

Pigeon Mail tackles the tough topics with honesty and integrity. My pieces delve into the intricacies of mental health care, especially within inpatient settings, and how these systems often fail the very individuals they are meant to protect. I explore the intersections of race, gender, and identity, particularly focusing on the experiences of those who, like me, straddle multiple identities and face unique challenges as a result.

I also take a closer look at the broader societal structures that contribute to issues like substance abuse, systemic racism, and the marginalization of care-experienced individuals. I do not have professional technical training in art or writing but I do have lived experience and a genuine goal of shedding light on truth.

Pigeon mail’s Mission

My mission is to bring attention to the issues that matter despite lack of coverage and to advocate for the reform of systems that perpetuate inequality and injustice. Change has never been made by ignoring systemic issues and remaining within the status quo, sharing minority stories can inspire action and create a more empathetic and compassionate world.
